Thank you for signing up for the Fall Youth League! This league was first held in the year 2000 with 56 athletes in one division. It has steadily grown and last year there were about 600 athletes in five divisions. The league has teams from about ten facilities around the state that practice at their own pool and then come here to Kearns for games, mostly on Saturdays, and occasionally we have games at other pools if we can’t fit all of the games at Kearns.

There are about 100 athletes on teams that practice here at Kearns. At this point we will have one Splashball team, 2 Elementary, 3 Jr High, 2 HS Girls, and 2 HS Boys. One thing new this year is that we are doing A and B divisions for Jr High, HS Girls, and HS Boys.

Practices begin this week. Here is the practice schedule:

Splashball – Mon, Wed 6:15-7:00 PM.

Elementary – Wed, Fri 6:15-7:15 PM.

Jr High – Tues, Thur 5:30-6:45 PM.

HS Girls – Tues, Thur 6:45-8:15.

HS Boys – Wed 7:15-8:45 PM & Thur 8:00-9:30 PM.

The only equipment required is a swim suit, and usually a tight fitting suit is best to reduce drag while swimming. We will provide everything else. All of the age groups will practice on the west end of the 50 M Pool except Splashball which will be in the Swimming Lesson pool inside.

The first games will be held September 9. A game schedule will be distributed in a couple weeks.

Remember that in addition to registering for the league through KOPFC, everyone must also be at least a Bronze level member of USA Water Polo if you’re not registered with USA Water Polo already. This is $35 that is paid directly to At the top of their website click JOIN.

JO’s – National Junior Olympics in Orange County, California went really well! We entered 3 boys teams (14U, 16U, 18U) and 3 girls teams (14U, 16U, 18U), the most we’ve ever entered. It seemed like everyone had a good experience, learned a lot, and represented our club and state well. We played teams from all over the country. JO’s is the biggest tournament in the world and this year’s was the largest it’s ever been with over 900 teams! I’ve attached all of the game results so you can see who and where we played and the scores. Next year will be in northern California also at the end of July. I hope you’ll try to go. I’d love to take even more teams if we can. Thank you to everyone that went and everyone that helped make the JO’s trip great for the teams!

Parade – as you know, we have entered our water polo team in the Kearns Hometown Days parade this Saturday, August 5. We hope all of the athletes can join in on the fun of walking in a parade and show the community that we have a lot of athletes playing water polo (about 150 this summer!). If you can participate, you need to be to the Kearns High parking lot by 8:15 AM, wear a Kearns Water Polo shirt or a water polo shirt of some kind (see me if you need one), comfortable shoes to walk to Big Lots, sunscreen, and help pass out candy to the crowd or carry banners or just walk. Jenn Nicholls (801-671-6484) and Missy Gowans (801-859-7141) are in charge of this and could use some help from other parents, so please contact them if you’re able. Should be fun!

Fall League – I’ve attached the information for the Fall League. This is a great time of year to play with games most every Saturday. I’ve extended the deadline to August 11 and practices begin the week of August 21. You won’t receive an email or call, just show up for practice. The league is sanctioned by USA Water Polo (except Splashball Division) so if you’re not already you need to be at least a Bronze member ($35) and upload a current photo for the roster checks.

Upcoming Travel Trips – we will be taking as many age groups as we can to the Grier Laughlin Invitational in Denver November 10-12 and taking 14U, 12U, and 10U if possible to the Eggbeater Invitational in Cedar City January 12-13. I’ll have more info about these trips later.

ODP – We will be hosting an ODP (Olympic Development Program) Camp here at our pool September 23-24. I’ll have more information soon but these are instructional camps that will have national team coaches here and it’s also a chance to tryout for the Mountain Zone Team for your age group.

Remember we just have three more practices this summer. The last day is Wed, August 9. I hope the summer has gone well and encourage you to get signed up for the Fall.

July 18, 2017

Many of our players will be in Orange County, CA next week for the National Junior Olympics. We’re taking six teams this year, the most we’ve ever taken. You can see more about the tournament on the Junior Olympics page of Good luck to all of the teams and if you’re not going this year hopefully you can plan on it next year.

Attached is the information about the Fall Season. This is a great time of year, especially for the younger players, and a great time to start if someone has never played before. The Fall Season is run much like a recreational league for other sports, with two practices each week and a game every Saturday for about 10 weeks. We’ve been running this league since the year 2000 and it has grown from 54 players in one division to about 600 last year in five divisions. We generally have 3-4 teams in each division that practices here at Kearns and then there are also about ten other facilities/clubs that put teams into the league and just come out for games. Let me know if you have any questions. Registration is available online – here is the link - The deadline to sign up is August 6. Practices begin the week of August 21.

Saturday, August 5, is the Kearns Hometown Days Parade and we’ve entered a Kearns Water Polo “float” in the parade. It is in the morning, generally about 8:00 AM, starts at Kearns High, and walks down 5400 South. We’ll send more info but please put this on your calendar. This is something we’ve done many years and the kids always have a good time.

I encourage you to follow the FINA World Championships going on right now in Budapest, Hungary. There are several games on TV and USA Water Polo is streaming them through their facebook page.

Remember that the last day of the summer season is August 9 and we just have two days we don’t have practice – July 26 and July 28 due to the LC State Swim Meet.

I hope everything is going well. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for playing!

July 3, 2017

I hope the summer is going well! We’ve had a huge turnout for this summer’s program, which makes practices more effective in many ways and a lot more fun! We have almost 125 athletes throughout the four groups playing this summer! The coaches are doing a great job of planning and running effective practices to help improve every player.

Upcoming Practice Schedule – we will be having normal practices this week through the holiday. The only days we have to cancel practice all summer are July 14, July 26, and July 28 due to swim meets at our pool (we will have practice on July 24). But, this is for the groups that practice outside. The Splashball group that practices inside will have practice on those days, including July 24.

Zone Championships – we took three teams to Cedar City for the Mountain Zone Championships, and we also had four players join the Albuqurque Water Polo Club’s 12U team. Our 18U girls won all four of their games to win the division and bring home the gold medal, beating Duke City and Colorado WPC twice each. Our 18U Boys team finished 3rd, losing to Duke City in the first game, but then winning the next two games for a rematch against Duke City. This time the team beat them and brought home a 3rd place medal. Our 12U players helped Albuquerque finish third and get a bronze medal. Thank you to everyone that went and helped make it a fun trip for everyone.

Fall League – registration will be available soon for the Fall League. This is a really fun time of year with games most Saturdays. The Fall League will start August 23 and end October 28. We will need some volunteer coaches for the younger age groups, so anyone interested should let me know asap.

May 25, 2017

Varsity State – Congratulations to our Varsity Girls team for winning the 4A State Championship last weekend and congratulations to our Varsity Boys team for finishing second. The girls defeated Cyprus and the boys were defeated by Murray. This is the girls’ 12th State Championship and the boys have one state 13 times and have been in the championship game every year since 2000. Both teams had a great season and excellent state tournament. We are very proud of how hard they worked all season and how well they represented our program. Several players were selected All-State (sorry, I don’t have the complete list yet) and Hannah Peercy and Sage Helton were selected by the coaches in 4A as Most Valuable Player. Thank you to everyone that supported the teams, helped motivate the players with door decorations and treats, and cheered for them at the tournament!

Summer Season – remember to get signed up for the Summer Season if you haven’t already. Practices will begin June 5. More information can be found on the website.

Masters League – we run a league in the summer on Wednesday nights mostly for adults to play but it is also open to high school players that are interested. This is good experience for them and more games to play, especially in the summer when we don’t have many games besides our travel trips. We are not planning to enter as a team unless we get a lot signed up. This is also a great way for you adults to get some exercise! The flyer is attached. Sign ups are due May 31 and games will begin June 7.

Zone Championships and JO’s – it’s pretty much crunch time on decisions to participate in the two travel trips this summer. I’ve attached and pasted below who I show as for sure going on these trips, so if there are any errors I need to know asap because I have to enter teams by May 31. Also, there’s still room for a few more spots on each team but let me know soon before they fill up. For those going to Zone Championships in Cedar City, the room block we have at the Abbey Inn will be released on May 31, so if you want to stay in that hotel you need to call them before then. The room block at the Clarion Inn & Suites for JO’s will be released June 15. This could change, but at this point I am planning on entering the following teams at Zones – 14U Coed (including the 12U’s playing up), 18U Girls, and 18U Boys, with the 16U’s playing up (instead of going coed, and if we get more we could split the 16u from the 18u). For JO’s, we are planning on 14U, 16U, and 18U Girls and Boys. If there are any 10U or 12U players that want to go to JO’s let me know and I can find a team for your to play with. These trips have been added to the online payment system so you can pay for them

Fundraiser Credits – the credits from the merchandise table at the two tournaments we ran have been entered into the system. Thank you to everyone that helped work the table but a special thank you to Denise Taylor for arranging for Kohls to be here and help and Kohls donated $2000 towards the profits of the Spring Fling tournament! Let me know if you have any questions on your credit. Sometimes the credits are put under different family members in case you can’t find it. We should have the results of the clothing fundraiser soon.

Games on YouTube – Thank you Scott Simonson for filming so many of our games and posting them on YouTube! I hope the players have taken advantage of watching the games. That is an important and powerful way to learn and improve as a player. If you haven’t, the games are still on there and we have a Kearns Water Polo channel if you want to watch some games.

Thank you Coaches – I would like to thank our coaches for all of their hard work during the Spring Season! I saw a lot of improvement in the players during the season! Some of the coaches will be continuing through the summer but some are not able to due to the switch to morning practices. Several of them will be back in the Fall when we go back to evening practices.

May 15, 2017

JV State Results – We had four teams in JV State, splitting our high age players from our Jr High players for boys and girls. All of the teams did great and competed well. Special congratulations to our high school JV Girls group for winning the State Championship last weekend! Our high school JV Boys finished 4th overall, our Jr High girls and boys finished about in the middle of the pack, winning some and losing some. Our coaches did great and everyone gained a lot of excellent experience. Thank you to everyone for their help with motivational gifts and cheering loud.

Games tomorrow / end of season – don’t forget about the games tomorrow night for our younger groups. We are planning on Splashball at 6:00, then Elem Coed, then Jr High girls, then Jr High Boys. This week is the final week of the spring season. Practice today and Wednesday for Elementary and Splashball and games for everyone tomorrow - no practice Thursday. Summer season starts June 5. The flier and info is on the team website and registration is now available.

Varsity State – Girls and Boys 4A Varsity State is this weekend at Murray. Games are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. They are finalizing the game schedule and it should be done by today. If you’re not playing please come cheer for our teams. There is not an admission fee. Our boys and girls are going into the tournament with the #1 seed. It should be a lot of fun!

Zones and JO’s – thank you to everyone that completed the online survey about Zones and JO’s. I’ve attached and pasted below what I show as the Yes’s. There were also a lot of maybe’s. Please let me know if what if have is correct or if anything needs to be changed. I have made contact with several other coaches about adding players once we get our list finalized. I hope to have this complete within the next two weeks so we can enter teams and everyone can make travel plans. The teams I can say we are taking for sure to Mountain Zone Championships in Cedar City at this point are 14U Coed, 16U Coed, and 18U Coed (if we get enough in any of these we will split into separate boys and girls teams). The teams I am confident enough to say for sure we are taking to JO’s are 14U Boys (with Matej playing up unless we get more 12U), 16U Boys, 18U Boys, 14U Girls, 16U Girls, and 18U Girls. We still have several holes to fill so please let me know soon if you’re a for sure yes before I pick up kids from other clubs, otherwise a spot could be gone (12-14 is the number we are looking for). Registration for these trips will be available soon. The teams that we are for sure taking you can make travel arrangements if you haven’t already. You should have the hotel info from a previous email.

Summer Season – attached and on the website is the flier for the summer. Registration is now available for the summer season. Let me now if you have any questions.

May 9, 2017 -

Junior League Tournament – Great job to all of our teams at the Spring Junior League Championships! All of the coaches were pleased with the improvement they’ve seen during the season. Thank you to those that had to drive to Park City and Olympus! I hope everyone had a good experience and had fun. The Splashball coaches have participation medals for those in that played in the Splashball division.

Park City Varsity Games – this Wed, May 10, our girls and boys Varsity teams play Park City at Park City. The game was originally scheduled for 6:30/7:30, but they’ve had to move it back to 7:00/8:00 start times. It is their Senior Night and they are also recognizing our seniors in addition to theirs before the game, which is very nice of them.

JV State – Attached is the Junior Varsity State Championship game schedule and rosters. We have entered two girls teams and two boys teams to give everyone a lot of playing time. This is for everyone that played JV which includes some of the Junior High players. Check the roster and please let me know if cannot be there.

Calendar – remember to be checking the practice calendars to know if there isn’t practice, games, etc. We don’t have Jr High practice this Thursday because of JV State at our pool. Next Tuesday, May 16, Herriman is bringing their Splashball, Elementary, and Jr High teams to our pool for the final games of the season.

May 1, 2017 -

May Day Tournament Results – our Varsity Girls and Boys played outside last weekend at Cottonwood Heights Rec Center for the annual May Day Tournament. Friday we played in snow and rain and the entire weekend was a good test of our toughness with the cold temperatures. But with most of the state’s top teams in the tournament we finished on first in boys and girls! Our girls defeated Cyprus 13-3 in the championship game and our boys beat Park City 12-10 in the final. It was great experience for our teams and always fun to play outside.

Jr High, Elem, Splashball Games – we had eight games last Saturday at our pool for our younger groups with Herriman and Olympus coming out to play us. Our teams did great and are playing well going into our end of season championship this weekend. We still have a couple weeks of practice and one more set of games with Herriman after this weekend for the younger.

Spring Junior League Championships – attached is the game schedule for the Spring Junior League Championships (formerly called Grommet League, for Jr High, Elementary, and Splashball). The game schedule is complicated so take some time to look it over and find our teams. It is also color coded to help. There are games at our pool, Olympus, and Park City. Most of our games are at our pool but Saturday morning the Splashball and Elementary games are at Park City and Olympus. We have five teams entered – Splashball, Elementary Girls, Elementary Boys, and two Jr High Mixed teams that we’ve called Hip and Hop. We’ve divided the Jr High teams what we think are pretty equal with the main goal being to get everyone a lot of playing time. The original schedule had our two teams listed as A and B, just to call them something until we changed them. We’ve called them Hip and Hop instead and this is represented at the top in the groups, but they didn’t get the team names changed in the game schedule portion (yet, but it will get updated). So if you see Kearns A it is Kearns Hip and Kearns B is Kearns Hop. Let me know if I left anyone off of the rosters or you have any questions or concerns with the rosters. We can modify them until the tournament begins depending on the reason for the change.

This week’s games – in addition to the Spring Junior League tournament this week, our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams plays at Olympus tomorrow night (Tuesday). It starts at 6:30 PM with Varsity girls, then Varsity boys, then JV girls, then JV boys. We will be white caps since we are away. Then on Wednesday we play our final regular season home games for Varsity and JV, playing Cyprus at our pool. Varsity girls at 3:30, then Varsity boys, then JV girls, then JV Boys. It is also Senior Night. We will be recognizing the Seniors right before each Varsity game. We’d like parents or guardians or any family member the athlete would like to have there with them during this recognition.

Zones/JO’s Survey – thank you to everyone that completed the survey. That helps a lot to know what teams we will enter and which age groups we will talk to other teams about combining.

Thanks for playing! Summer season practices start Monday, June 5. Registration will be available very soon.

April 27, 2017 -

I hope the Spring Season has been going well for you! We are fast approaching our season ending tournaments for each of our age groups. Keep an eye on your email and our team website – as soon as these game schedules are given to me I will pass them on to you.

Utah Summer Games - Our teams did very well at the Utah Summer Games tournament last weekend in Cedar City. We entered two boys teams and two girls teams. There were 20 boys teams and 15 girls teams at this tournament! The teams were split into a Gold Division (basically Varsity) and a Silver Division (basically JV). Our Varsity Girls finished second in the Gold division, losing to Vegas by one in sudden victory overtime. That was an exciting game! Our Varsity Boys finished fourth in the Gold division, losing to Murray in pool play (we had beat Murray just three days earlier) which put us in the 3rd Place game where we lost to Vegas 11-8. Our JV Girls team got the gold medal in the Silver division, beating Southern Utah 11-3 in the championship game and our JV Boys finished fourth in the Silver Division. It was a successful trip and I think everyone had a good time. Thank you to everyone that helped supervise, arrange treats, helped with the lunch on the grass Saturday afternoon, filming, scoresheets, etc. We couldn’t do it without you!

Park City Tournament - Our younger teams did great at the Park City Tournament last weekend! Thank you to all of the families and the coaches that were able to make it to the games. We gained very valuable experience and learned a lot. We should have the game schedule soon for the “Grommet” League tournament which is next weekend (May 4-6).

Games on Saturday for Jr High, Elem, & Splashball teams - Don’t forget about the games this Saturday at our pool for our Jr High, Elem, and Splashball groups.  Here are the approximate times. MAKE SURE YOU ARE THERE 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE GAME TIME TO TALK TO YOUR COACH AND WARM UP. There will be separate warm up area.

8:30 AM – Splashball vs Herriman

9:15 AM - Elem coed vs Herriman

10:00 AM - Jr high girls vs Herriman

10:45 AM - Jr high boys vs Herriman

11:30 AM – Splashball vs Olympus

12:15 PM - Elem girls vs Olympus

1:00 PM - Elem boys vs Olympus

1:45 PM - Jr High Coed vs Olympus

Games on Friday & Saturday for Varsity - We’ve been passing it out at practice but attached is the game schedule for the May Day Tournament for the Varsity teams this weekend at Cottonwood Heights Rec Center. This will be outdoor so dress warm (the athletes in the water will be fine – they’ll be warmer than those of us on deck!).

Senior Night – next Wednesday, May 3, is our last regular season home game and will be Senior Night. We play Cyprus here at our pool. More info to come but we’d like the parents/guardians of our Seniors to try to be at the game.

Survey - If you haven’t filled out this survey CLICK HERE FOR SURVEY please fill it out asap and whether it is yes or no to these two summer travel trips. This is important info so we know which teams we have enough to enter teams in and if we need to reach out to other local clubs about combining efforts.

KOPFC Info – There’s a lot going on here at KOPFC right now. A new Executive Director was recently hired and started Monday. Her name is Patti Hansen. She has over 25 years of experience in the field and comes to us most recently from the Cottonwood Heights Rec. Center. She’ll do a great job and if you have a chance please try to meet her. Also, you may have noticed in the main lobby, and if you haven’t you should check it out, the plans for an expansion project that will connect us with the oval and provide more fitness and weight lifting space, meeting room space, and part of it will be for USA Speedskating and the Oval. The project has four contributors besides KOPFC – USA Speedskating, Utah Athletic Foundation (the Oval), SL County, and the State of Utah. It will be great when it’s done but construction is never great. We will see a lot of dust and noise for about 15 months. You can also go to for more info.

Summer Season - Summer Season practices will begin Monday, June 5. More info and how to register will be out soon.

April 17, 2017 -

Attention Jr High Group – there will not be a Jr High (8thU) game tomorrow night, Tuesday, April 18, at Murray. We can not have practice because of a Copper Hills home game. See you at Olympus tonight.

April 17, 2017 -

For those in the Splashball Group – I made a mistake in the email I sent yesterday - there is practice tonight (Monday, April 17). It’s the Elementary Group (and Jr High) that have a game tonight, not Splashball. Sorry about that.

April 16, 2017 -

Spring Season Kearns Water Polo Families,

Calendar Reminders – remember to check the calendar, either the paper versions we’ve passed out if you have one or on the team website under Calendar, to make sure you’re clear on when we have games, practices, don’t have practice, etc. This week we have 6th & 8thU games at Olympus tomorrow night (Monday night) at Olympus. Our Varsity, JV, and 8thU have games at Murray Tuesday night (no Jr High practice Tuesday night), our Varsity and JV have the trip to Cedar City this weekend, and our 8thU, 6thU, and 4thU have games at Olympus Friday and at Park City on Saturday. The Splashball and Elementary groups do not have practice Monday but there is practice on Wednesday. Jr High does not have practice Tuesday but does have practice Thursday (unless you’re going to Summer Games in Cedar City).

Summer Tournament Survey – Please take a minute to fill out this quick survey to let us know your interest in attending Mountain Zone Championships in Cedar City June 23-25 (Friday at noon through Sunday at about noon) and Junior Olympics (JO’s) in Orange County, CA at the end of July. This information is very important so we know the interest level from our club before we start asking people from other clubs. Please complete this survey by April 26. Our goal is to enter as many teams as possible so that our players can play in their own age group. Depending on the interest level from our club we might invite players from other clubs. We have also secured a block of rooms for both events so if you are for sure going you can make your hotel reservations if you’re going to stay at the team hotel. You should wait until mid May to make definite travel plans once we see which teams we are going to enter in each tournament.

1.  Mountain Zone Championships - $80-$95 to the team (to KOPFC – actual amount will depend on how many athletes attend) to cover tournament entry fee and coach's travel. Travel and lodging is on your own. Team hotel is the Abby Inn, 940 W. 200 N., Cedar City, UT, 1-800-325-5411, $105 per night, Kearns Water Polo room block ends May 31. Tournament starts at noon on June 23 so you should be able to drive there that morning. We will enter as many teams as possible in both genders 18U, 16U, 14U, 12U, 10U. There will be teams there from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.
2.  JO's - $270-$295 to team (to KOPFC – actual amount will depend on how many athletes attend) to cover tournament entry fee, coach's travel, and team gear. Travel and lodging is on your own. The Team hotel is the Clarion Inn & Suites, 2620 Hotel Terrace Dr., Santa Ana, CA. 92705, (714) 966-5200, $115 per night, Kearns Water Polo room block ends June 15 (this is the same hotel we stayed at a few years ago when JO's was in Orange County – thank you Tina for arranging this for us!). Tournament starts early in the morning on the dates above so travel will need to be done the day before. You will be able to go home on the last day of the tournament. We will enter as many teams as possible in both genders 18U, 16U, 14U, 12U, 10U. There will be teams there from all over the country! This is one of the best tournaments of the year. We will play 7-10 games.

Summer Games Trip to Cedar City this weekend – For Varsity and Junior Varsity - I haven’t received the final game schedule but I should get it tomorrow and will send it out and make copies. But, at this point they have our first game at 4:40 PM on Thursday, so the bus will be leaving at 11:00 AM.

Park City “Battle of the Ages” Tournament for the younger groups – I’ve attached the game schedule for the tournament this weekend for our 8thU, 6thU, and 4thU teams. We’ve also been passing it out at practice. Our games on Friday will be at Olympus and the games Saturday will be at Park City. Please let your coach know if you can not be at one of more of the games so they can make sure we have enough players.

Congrats to U. of Utah! – The University of Utah, coached by our Adam Huff, beat Air Force Academy 5-3 yesterday to win the Rocky Mountain Conference Championship! The winner of each conference earns a spot at Collegiate Club Nationals, this year in Pittsburgh, PA, May 5-7. Former Kearns player Alex Walker is on the team. Thank you to everyone that came and watched and helped run the table. They were treated to some good polo and a great championship game!

Goalie Clinic with Tumua – our goalies were treated to some amazing instruction last Saturday by Tumua Anae! Tumua was on the 2012 Women’s Olympic Team that won the gold medal at the London Olympics! She lives in Salt Lake now and was gracious enough to come out Saturday morning and work with our goalies!

Fundraiser Credits – The credits from the second round of orange sales and the newspaper fundraiser from last fall have been added to the system. I’m waiting for the results from the merchandise sales at our two tournaments and the clothing drive fundraiser. I’ll let you know when those are entered. Let me know if you have any questions or problems accessing the credits.

Games on YouTube – Remember to watch our team’s games on YouTube. We have a Kearns Water Polo Channel. Scott and Lisa Simonson have been working really hard to film as many games as possible and post them to YouTube. Thank you Scott and Lisa! I encourage you to watch the games. You can learn a lot by watching games even if it’s not your game or you’re not in the game at the time.

Emails pasted to website – A few weeks ago I started pasting the information that I email out to the group to the club website. So just in case you think you may have missed an email or can’t find an email with certain information it should be on the website on the News & Info tab.

April 6, 2017

Clothing Fundraiser – Remember that the Clothing Fundraiser is this Saturday, April 8. There will be a truck in the northwest corner of the KOPFC parking lot from 8:00-11:00 AM. There will be some parents there to help put the bags into the truck and record how many bags you donated. The bags must be the large 30 gallon type garbage bag. They will give us $.15 per pound and the majority of this will go directly to the athlete as a credit in their account. Thank you to Kim Hurst for putting this together and coordinating the helpers!

Spring Fling Tournament – For those Varsity and Junior Varsity players playing in the tournament at our pool that started today I hope it’s going well so far and good luck in the games tomorrow and Saturday. The game schedule and rosters are on the website. For those not playing I encourage you to come watch, cheer for our teams, and check out the USA Water Polo merchandise that you can usually only buy when you go to tournaments in California. We also have all of our team gear out so it’s a good time to buy any team gear including suits, shirts, backpacks, etc.

Summer Games Trip to Cedar City – For those that have told me they are going to Summer Games in Cedar City later this month (Varsity and Junior Varsity invited), you must fill out a line of the attached release form and give it to Brad by April 15. We’ve also been passing these forms out at practice.

CWPA Rocky Mountain Conference Championships – Next weekend, April 14-15, we will be hosting the Women’s Collegiate Water Polo Association Championships here at our pool.  I’ve attached the game schedule. There is no charge for admission. The winner of this tournament gets to go to Women’s Collegiate Club Nationals. Come cheer for the University of Utah that has several of our former Kearns players and the team is coached by our very own Adam Huff!

Zone Championships and JO’s – I will be putting out more details about these two travel tournaments that are this summer and hopefully they aren’t new to you since we’ve been talking about them for a while, but please be ready to decide whether or not you will be going to these. We have the hotels lined up and I’ll have more info soon. Our goal is to get our teams lined up for these two events by the end of April or first of May.

March 30, 2017 -

Practice Calendars - Attached and on the team website are the practice calendars. Please check these frequently since there are some days we need to cancel or modify practices due to games or other things going on at our pool.

Spring Fling Tournament April 6-8 – Attached and on the website is the game schedule and team rosters for the Varsity and Junior Varsity tournament we are hosting at our pool next weekend. We will also be selling USA Water Polo merchandise and team gear again if you’re interested in buying anything.

Car Wash – thank you to everyone that helped with the high school car wash service project yesterday at the Kearns Senior Center. Almost $500 was raised that went towards the Meals on Wheels program. It was also great to see the high school students work hard to help benefit the community. Special thanks to Coach Adam for organizing the event.

Champions for Charity Tournament – remember that this Saturday at our pool is an informal tournament and the proceeds will benefit the winning team’s charity of choice. The games are for our high school varsity and junior varsity teams but everyone is invited to come watch and help with the raising of funds. There will be a small admission fee and a bake sale if you’re interested. Coach Adam will be sending more info soon.

March 19, 2017 -

Kearns Kickoff Tournament – the high school tournament we hosted last Wed-Sat went really well! Our Varsity and Junior Varsity teams all did well and gained a lot of excellent experience. Both of our Platinum division teams took first place, with the girls beating Cyprus and the boys beating Park City. We also sold a lot of USA Water Polo and Kearns gear that helped raise money for the club and those that worked the booth. We will be doing a similar tournament April 6-8 if you didn’t get a chance to check out the merchandise. Special thank you to Denise Taylor for organizing the booth and arranging the schedule of those that helped work the booth. And thank you to our coaches for their long hours and to those that worked the tables.

Game Schedules/Rosters – I’ve attached and put on the website the game schedules for the Jr High, Elementary, and Splashball teams. Note that our next games are this Tuesday, March 21, Park City at Kearns. Remember that the game times are approximate because it often depends if the games before that are on schedule. I’ve also attached and put on the website the rosters for the various groups. Note that some players are on multiple teams for games, even if it’s not the same team they practice with. Sometimes the other team we are playing have enough for separate girls/boys games, sometimes we combine for coed games, and sometimes we will split the players into “A” and “B” based on experience and skill level. The main goal is to get as much game experience as possible for these younger players. Let me know if I missed anyone or if you have any questions.

Olympic Development Program (ODP) – Several of our players were selected to play on the Mountain Zone Team for their age group. They competed at ODP Nationals in northern California – the boys were February 26-28 and the girls were March 10-12. Our Zone Teams finished higher than they had for several years but more importantly these players had the opportunity to play against many of the top players in the country for their age group. Two of our players were selected for the next step of the process called the National Team Selection Camp (NTSC). Sage Helton and Hannah Peercy were selected to attend NTSC. This is a great accomplishment for them and our club. Congratulations to all of our players that made the Zone Team and NTSC! As part of being selected to NTSC those that go have a $1,200 fundraising obligation to USA Water Polo. USA Water Polo is a 501c3 so donations are tax deductible. If you or someone you know would like to donate towards Sage’s fundraising obligation here is the link –

Oranges – I still have about ten cases of oranges left if anyone would like to buy or sell them. Let me know.

Albuquerque Tournament – we had some interest in the Albuquerque Tournament trip but not enough to send any teams. Thank you for those that were interested but maybe next year.

Utah Summer Games Tournament – the water polo portion of the Utah Summer Games is held April 20-22. We have entered two girls teams and two boys teams. Anyone on our high school Varsity and Junior Varsity rosters are invited to go on this trip. We take a charter bus and stay two nights in a hotel. I’ve attached the trip information flier. For those on Varsity or JV, please return the bottom portion of the flier and pay online by March 31 if you’re interested in going on this trip. For families interested in going to watch, you’re welcome to stay wherever you’d like but I did reserve some extra rooms at our team hotel if you want to stay there. Those rooms will be held until April 6.

March 14, 2017 -

Picture Day – another reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, March 15, is Team Picture Day. Team and individual pictures will be taken during practice time (Jr High group please be there at 5:30) in the 50 Meter Pool area. If you want to buy them I’ve attached the form but you don’t have to buy them. A Memory Mate (Package 1 - Team and Individual) is $15. Please be there so everyone is in the picture.

Games Friday for Jr. High, Elem, Splashball – we’ve set up games for this Friday, March 17, at Olympus High School. 4055 S 2300 E, Holladay, UT 84124 . Splashball (4th/U) at 6:30, Elementary Coed (6th/U) at 7:15, and Jr High Coed (8th/U) at 8:00 PM. Please be there 30 minutes before game time. The pool is in a separate building south of the school. We have additional games set up for these groups and a game schedule will be sent out soon. There will be times we play coed and times we split by gender depending on who we’re playing.

Oranges - For those that sold oranges, thank you for getting them picked up and delivered. I did order 25 extra cases so if you know anyone that would like to buy more let me know. A big thank you to Denise Taylor for her help with the oranges, tallying the orders, organizing the orders when they were delivered, and volunteering countless hours helping with the fundraiser. Thanks Denise!

Team Tee Shirts – all of the players should have received a team shirt. If you haven’t please talk to me or your coach. We also have some available for family members to buy for $10. Pay online and then let me know and I’ll get it to you.

Private Lessons – our coaches are available to do private lessons. If you’re interested, talk to the coach to set up a day and time then pay online (under Water Polo, then Private Polo Lessons). Sometimes some one on one in the water can help certain skills sink in better.

Spectator Behavior at games – attached is a Spectator Code of Conduct Form for the league. We are supposed to have a signed copy for each athlete on file. More importantly, please keep your displeasure towards referee calls against our team to a minimum. If you ever have a problem with a referee, coach or player from another team, or anything unusual at a game, please stay calm, act maturely, and talk to me or your coach and let us handle the situation.

Tournament at our pool – we are hosting a high school tournament at our pool this week, mostly Wednesday through Saturday. Thursday we will not have practice for the Jr High group. Thursday through Saturday we will be selling water polo merchandise as well as Kearns Water Polo gear. This is a good time to buy gear like suits, new shirts, old shirts, hats, etc. Especially for the younger players, it’s a good time to come watch the high school teams play. We have most of the top teams in the state in the tournament. Watching is a good way for players to learn and improve. And please come cheer for our teams! The game schedule is on our website.

March 12, 2017 -

For those that sold oranges, as promised they will be delivered to us tomorrow afternoon, Monday, March 13. As of today the driver said about 3:00 PM, so please plan on picking them up after 4:00 PM from the northwest corner of the 50 Meter Pool, outside. We will have wagons and hand carts available. Please park on the west side of the parking lot and go around the outside by the west gate, in between the pool and the Oval. We will have your order form to give back to you. They need to be picked up and delivered tomorrow. If you don’t deliver them tomorrow night you need to keep them in a cool place, preferably refridgerated but not frozen. YOU MUST GET THEM BY 6:30 PM.

For those on the Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) team, which includes some of the Junior High group, we have a tournament at our pool this week. I’ve attached the game schedule and rosters. Please let me know if you can not be at a game if you’re listed on a roster.

March 9, 2017 -

Oranges Fundraiser – Thank you to everyone that sold oranges as part of the fundraiser. We sold just under 400 cases! This is a huge increase from the 228 we sold last year. I talked to the farmer that we buy the oranges from in California today and he said they should arrive Monday afternoon/evening, March 13. I’ll let you know for sure when we get closer but you need to plan on picking them up by Monday evening. The credits for selling oranges have been added to your account so you can pay for whatever you need to pay for if you’re waiting for the credit. Remember that you will only see the credit on the final payment screen and you have to click the box that asks if you want to apply the credit. We try to combine accounts within families so you can access the credits from any family member but let me know if you have any problems with this.

Team Pictures – next Wednesday, March 15, is Picture Day. Team and individual pictures will be taken during your practice on the pool deck. For the Junior High Group that doesn’t normally practice on Wednesdays we need you to come in at 5:30 for the pictures. I’ve attached the flyer to use if you want to buy them and any extras. You don’t have to buy the pictures but please be there in your suit so everyone is in the picture even if you don’t buy them. Checks payable to Sports Craze Photo or you can pay with cash or credit card on the form.

Game Schedules – the Varsity and Junior Varsity (high school teams) game schedules are on the website. The Jr High, Elementary, and Splashball game schedules are still being finalized and will be done soon. There are several games set up for the younger teams, including two tournaments – at Park City April 21-22 and the State Tournament May 4-6 (location to be determined, probably a combination of our pool, Olympus, and Park City). We are also working on calendars to show days there will not be practice and those should be done soon.

Team Gear – we have more team suits in and have all the sizes if you’d like to buy one. We also have team backpacks, last year’s team shirts in limited sizes, some youth size grey hooded sweatshirts, and some old team suits in limited sizes. This year’s team tee shirts arrived today and we have started passing them out to the players at practice and will continue to do that. All current players will receive a shirt for free and we will have some extras to sell for $10. We will also be selling the team gear and some USA Water Polo merchandise at the tournament we will be hosting at our pool next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday March 16-18. The tournament is for Varsity and Junior Varsity teams but everyone is welcome to come watch and check out the merchandise available for purchase. Otherwise the gear is kept in my office so once you pay for it online come see me or ask me to bring it out to practice to give to the player.

Travel Trips – We are still interested in sending 14U, 12U, and 10U teams to Albuquerque if there is enough interest. The tournament is April 7-9 and will cost $75. There will be teams there from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Please reply by March 18 if you’re interested in going so I can see if there is enough interest. Our other travel trip for the spring will be the Utah Summer Games tournament in Cedar City April 20-22. This is for Varsity and Junior Varsity teams and I will have more information on that trip soon. In the summer we plan to take teams to the Mountain Zone Championships June 23-25 in Cedar City this year and then also JO’s (Junior Olympics) at the end of July in Orange County, CA. JO’s is a great tournament but it is expensive since it’s over four days and each team plays 7-10 games. I’ll have more info out soon because we need to get commitments on that tournament this spring.

Clothing Drive Fundraiser – remember to be saving your old clothes and collecting from your neighbors. The drop off day will be Saturday, April 8 (I’ll get back to you on the time and exact location). It can be clothes, bedding, shoes, etc. and will be weighed. We get $.15 per pound and the player’s portion of the total will be put in the system as a credit.

February 23, 2017 -

I hope the Spring Season is going well so far! We’ve had two good weeks of practice and our coaches are doing a great job! We’ve had two clinics that went really well! The clinic with Olympians Genai Kerr, Ryan Bailey, and Kelly Rulon was awesome! We had about 70 athletes there that learned or reviewed many important skills and I think had a lot of fun. Especially the group the got to face time with Maggie Steffens! The Free Clinic went really well also! We had about 40 kids try the sport and see if it’s something for them. Several have joined the program as a result of the clinic. Thank you to all of the coaches and high school players that helped!

Welcome New Coaches Dani, Jen, and Cason! I’m pleased to announce the addition of three new coaches to add to our staff! Coach Danielle (Dani) Mortimer grew up in the Fresno, California area. She helped Buchanan High School win 3 CIF (State) titles and went on to play at Fresno Pacific University. During and after her college playing career she helped coach at Clovis North High School, Fresno City College, the Clovis Water Polo Club, and lastly with the newly formed Royal 559 Club. So she brings about six years of coaching experience. She will be helping coach the Jr High Group (14/U) along with Coach Sam and Coach Adam and will also be coaching the Elementary School Group (12/U) along with Coach Jen. Coach Jen Cooper played water polo and swam at Taylorsville High School and she is currently also the Taylorsville High School coach during the Spring High School Season. She has also helped coach in the Fall League. She has four children that are either currently on our team or are with our team when it’s not high school season. Coach Jen will be helping coach the Elementary School group with Coach Dani. Coach Cason Cutshaw graduated from Kearns High last year and had a phenomenal high school career, helping Kearns win State all four years he was varsity, was MVP his senior year, and was selected 1st Team All-American! He will be helping coach the high school group.

We’re excited to have these three coaching with our club along with myself, Adam Huff, Chris Horne, Sam Huff, and Tristan Spoerri!

Oranges – I hope you’re selling lots of oranges! Remember the forms and money are due next Tuesday, February 28. This is a great way to help earn money to help pay for your participation fee, trips, suits, shirts, backpacks, etc. Even for stuff in the summer like Zone Championships in Cedar City or JO’s in Orange County, CA.

ODP Zone Team - Congratulations to the following Kearns Water Polo athletes that have been selected to represent our zone on the Mountain Zone Team for their age group. Some of these players play with us during most of the year but are currently with their high school team. The boys go to ODP Nationals this weekend and the girls have ODP Nationals March 10-12. ODP Nationals is in Northern California this year. You can see the schedule and follow results at

Clinic with 6 Olympians! Friday, February 17, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, AT OUR POOL! Only $35 (or $44 if you’re not a KOPFC Member)! Please register online. This is a tremendous opportunity for our athletes to meet and work with water polo players that have achieved the highest level possible. Many of you attended the clinic with Genai last year and this year he is bringing five other Olympians so it will be even better!

Genai Kerr – 2004 Olympics

Courtney Mathewson – 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Ryan Bailey – 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 Olympics.

Kelly Rulon – 2004 and 2012 Olympics.

Josh Samuels – 2016 Olympics.

Tamua Anae – 2012 Olympics.

Free Clinic for brand new players – Friday, February 24, 4:00-5:00 PM. This is for brand new players 5-14 years old so they can try water polo and see if they like it. Please help spread the word – held in the Swim Lesson Pool. Please help grow our team, especially our younger groups like Splashball, 10U, 12U, etc. There is a flyer attached.

Oranges Fundraiser – we will be selling oranges again this year to help everyone raise the money to pay for everything. We did this last year and those that worked hard at it raised enough to pay for everything including JO’s in the summer! The flyer and order form is attached. We sell the cases for $34 and $10 of that goes directly to the athletes account as a credit! Start selling now and the forms and money will be due February 28. The oranges will be delivered about a week after that.

Clothing Drive Fundraiser – remember to be saving your old clothes, shoes, bedding, etc. and collecting from your family and neighbors. The drop off date is Saturday, April 8. Athletes raise money based on how much they donate.

January 27, 2017 -

I hope the Winter Season has gone well for you. As you can tell, it is the slowest time of year as far as games go but a good time to focus on practices and improving individual skills. The coaches have done a great job and worked really hard with the athletes!

Eggbeater Tournament – Thank you to all of the families that went to this tournament in Cedar City! We entered 14U, 12U, and 10U teams that played several games, competed well, and had a lot of fun. Thank you to the coaches for all their hard work. This will definitely be an annual event so plan on it.

Spring Season – the last day for the Winter Season, depending on what group you’re in, is Friday, Feb. 3. We will take a little break and start the Spring Season Monday, Feb. 13 (I know the calendar says Feb 14 but it’s changed). Registration is available online and the flyer for Spring is attached. The practice times are basically the same but we will have many more games including a couple travel trip opportunities.

Clinic with Olympians – On Friday, February 17, 11:00 AM-2:00 PM, we’ve arranged for several Olympians to be at our pool to put on a clinic. Genai Kerr will be there for those that remember him from last year as well as Ryan Bailey, Courtney Mathewson, Kelly Rulon, Josh Samuels, and Tumua Anae! There will be a charge and there might be an age and/or experience level limit. We are still working out some of the details and will have more info soon.

Hallway Floor resurfacing project – So you are aware, the floor in the hallway that leads from the Indoor Rec Pool to the 50 M pool and where you come out of the locker rooms to enter the 50 Meter Pool is being re-done. The company is starting the project this Sunday and will be done by next Saturday, but there will be some times, for sure Monday-Wednesday, when anyone going to the 50 M Pool will have to go down the main hallway by the Aerobics room, out the glass door next to concessions, and go into the pool area using the doors on the northwest corner of the structure. There will also be times when going from the Indoor Comp pool to the 50 and back people will need to use the doors leading out of the Indoor Rec Pool to the main entrance (that are normally locked), passed the front desk, and either down the hall like described above or through the locker rooms once the floor on the 50 M pool side is done.

January 7, 2017 -

I hope your new year is off to a good start! Just a few reminders.

Team Party – remember that tonight, January 7, is our team party! We will be in the Indoor Comp Pool (swim lesson pool) all by ourselves with the Wibit set up to play on or you can just hang out with your teammates. Please bring a treat to share if you can (nothing major, just a bag of chips, cookies, etc.). The party will be 8:00-10:00 PM for all of the players currently on the team (sorry no friends or family). Please enter and exit using the Comp Pool doors instead of the main entrance. There are locker rooms over there to change in. The coaches will be there to help supervise. I hope you can make it!

USA Water Polo Membership – if you haven’t already renewed your membership with USA Water Polo you need to do this as soon as possible. It is done through the website, unless you are on free or reduced school lunch, then you should fill out the attached form and mail it in with a copy of the form from your school – this gives you a Gold Membership for only $35. I have copies if you need one.

Calendar – remember to keep an eye on the season calendar that is posted on our website for any days we don’t have practice. For example, next Friday, Jan 13, we will not have practice because many of us will be in Cedar City for the Eggbeater tournament and also no practice on Monday, Jan 14, due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

I hope to see all of our players at the party tonight!

Thanks for playing the best sport in the world!
